Happy birthday, Jimmy Greaves
Without a doubt the greatest ever English striker.

Had a phenomenal strike rate:

1957–1961-----Chelsea---------------157---(124)

1961-------------A.C. Milan--------------12------(9)

1961–1970----Tottenham Hotspur--321--(220)

1970–1971----West Ham United-----38----(13)

1959–1967----England-----------------57----(44)

Could drink for England as well :-)

I’ve got no time for Greaves. Always took the piss out of West Ham on the telly and never wanted to play for us in the first place.

Re: Happy birthday, Jimmy Greaves
One thing that stood out on that Greavsie film was his electrifying pace to get on the end of the ball… like lightning… loved the story Tommy Docherty and Ron Harris told about him… Chopper had marked him out of the game and the Doc’ had warned him about Jimmy and his tricks… says to chopper…”Oh look at that plane up there”… harris looks up… Greaves has gone… and scores the winner… shall view again… great watch

Re: Happy birthday, Jimmy Greaves
He was probably thinking of the alternative universe where Greaves played and Helmut got 3

Understood he said something like he thought the ball went to the first goalscorer?

Sven, if it wasn't for that French player who raked his studs down Jimmy Greaves' leg, we might be talking about a different world cup final hat-trick hero

Wish I could have seen him play, and he is one of those that if our neck of the woods could put an all time great team together by region of birth I'd like to think it would piss over everybody.

Re: Happy birthday, Jimmy Greaves
You can't really compare our Bobby to Jimmy, different positions and all that, having said that, both were impeccable in their respective roles

Re: Happy birthday, Jimmy Greaves
He is without a doubt the greatest English player of all time.

Better than Moore*, Bobby Charlton, Shearer, Beckham and every other pretender.

Watch old clips of him, he just glides across the grass with the ball, never on his arse and always stands up. His kit never seemed to be dirty.

I saw him play and I saw him score.

*you couldn't get a fag paper between them, but i'm sticking Jimmy Greaves

I heard that we turned him down as a youngster and he signed for Chelsea.

Re: Happy birthday, Jimmy Greaves
I take it West Ham didn't sign him as a youth player as we were a second division club at the time?

JLAP

He was before my time as well. But, I remember being amazed watching a fairly veteran Pop Robson when I was a kid and being amazed at his finishing skills and telling my sister he was the best ever, when an older voice said behind me, that's because you never saw Greavsie.

Yup, every time he was interviewed he had to get a dig in re the bad culture (drinking, down the cafe etc) by the players at West Ham.

He was right and perhaps we'd have been more successful if that culture had been stamped out.

Can't argue with his record.
